Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Golden Sunshade™ canopy frame different from the competition?

All parts are fabricated in house and our shops are equipped with modern CNC cutters, drills, and equipment to deliver a precise fit and finish. Our Heavy-Duty (HD) canopy features the 8" slotted Side Rail (patent pending). It's the strongest canopy Side Rail in the industry, equipped with a T-Slot system for convenient adjustment. It offers a sleek 19° roof pitch to shed water and keep your boat protected, while leaving your view open.

All Side Rails are fully welded aluminum, so they are built for rugged saltwater, coastal, and cold weather environments - without any bolts or screws in the assembly. Around the perimeter is a round bar bungee tie-off system, which reduces wear on bungees in comparison to a flat bar system. This tie-off system is also stronger and much more convenient for seasonal and storm removal than a continuously tied bungee system.

Our Bows, which are the "ribs" of the frame, are a single rolled piece of round tube, as opposed to two-pieces joined together with 4-way couplers. This single piece design has many benefits: it creates a much stronger resistance to down-force pressure and shaking caused by high winds, it greatly minimizes the use of modular parts and self-drilling screws, and it ensures that our Center Spans (which create the "spine" of the frame) have a straight and true fit every time.

Every canopy comes with Adjustable Leg Uprights, which have been conveniently designed to incorporate full height/fore/aft adjustability. Our Kicker and Lateral Support Brackets are also adjustable, which eliminates drilling holes in the frame.

Is there anything special about your fabric?

All of our fabrics have been chosen to withstand the harshest elements - but so have our competitors. What makes our tops so special is that after they are fully heat welded together, they are reinforced with our bartack sewing machine equipped with Gore Tenara PTFE thread which will not ever fade or rot. This virtually eliminates bungee strap failure, a common issue which can be the beginning of the end for a canopy top. Our vinyl bungee straps maintain the same beautiful aesthetic as the rest of the top and have a much longer lifespan than black nylon/webbing that we commonly see.

We take special care in our factory to conveniently pre-fit the top with bungees and roll them for easy and fast installation onto your frame. This also "rolls" into the installation, where we train our installers to fasten the bungees from the center outwards, pulling out any wrinkles and achieving a tight, precise fit. Our corners feature a squared finish to match the edge of the frame and are equipped with extra straps for durability. The fact that we have over 30 color options and can ship them anywhere in a box is just icing on the cake.

How can I purchase a Golden Sunshade™?

We have a network of dealers all around the world that we work through to sell and install our canopies. We vet our dealers to make sure they have the equipment, people, and knowledge to get the job done right. Give us a call today and we will connect you with one of our expert installers to bring your shade project to life.

Have a preferred installer that you trust? Loop us in with your favorite contractor and purchase a new canopy direct from the manufacturer.

There isn't a dealer in my area, and I can't install it myself. What can I do?

We are constantly looking to grow our dealer network, and our team is experienced in finding the right partners to deliver high quality results. If we don't have a dealer or installer in your area, please leave your details in our contact form or give us a call so that we can search for a local install team that can receive, unload, and properly install your shade.

Do I need to remove my vinyl top for any reason?

Our canopies are rated to withstand up to 70MPH winds with the vinyl top secured to the frame. If winds are to exceed 70MPH, the vinyl top must be removed. With the vinyl top removed, our frames are rated to withstand up to 180MPH winds. The top must also be removed for the winter before snowfall, unless your frame was specifically designed to handle snow load. Also, if you have visible damage to your fabric or frame, we recommend removing the fabric to avoid further damage and assess for repairs needed.

How often do I need to change my bungees?

Significantly worn bungees have reduced strength and may limit their ability to hold the canopy top securely to the frame, which can result in damage.  We recommend bungee replacement every 18-24 months or when there is significant wear (loss of elasticity, breakage, etc.), whichever is sooner. In general, we recommend an overall canopy inspection once or twice a year, as well as after major storms or high-wind events.

I can't reach my bungees to replace them or remove the canopy top. What can I do?

Our dealers are trained to make it fast and easy. For a hassle-free solution, contact your local dealer. If you are in an area without a dealer, contact our team for a list of suggestions on local companies that may be able to help with top removals and replacements.

For DIYers or those in a pinch, we have found a couple of other solutions that beat monkeying around or setting up scaffolding. A number of online retailers such as Amazon, Home Depot, etc. carry adjustable pole and hook solutions from 6'-15'+ long. With an ample pole and hook extension, it's easy for anyone to stand in their boat while it's raised up on the lift to unhook the canopy bungees. From there, pulling it off to the land side will allow you to pull it to flat ground to dry off, fold up, and store safely. In the worst-case scenario with limited tools, you may even consider cutting the bungees to save the top. We do not recommend trying to remove a canopy top during periods of high sustained winds or gusts.

Can you make a replacement vinyl tops to fit a competitor canopy frame?

Yes! We can make replacement tops for a number of different canopy manufacturers. We incorporate our double-layered straps and stitched reinforcement on all canopy replacement tops for your peace of mind, even if it's not our frame. With just a few measurements and some brief information, our team can work with you to get your replacement on order.

Can you repair my fabric top?

We will provide repairs and/or replacements for applicable tops purchased through us or our dealers that are still covered warranty. Although we will not repair any tops past the warranty date, nor will we repair any competitor tops, we can offer suggestions for DIY repairs for both and potential repair locations for both.
